Let me give you an example from my childhood that explains my opinion. When I was an 8 year old second grader, I spent 1 month in a hospital. After spending this time away from school, I discovered I did not like school. I was not afraid to go from my house to downtown and spend time there. Every day, I told my mom that I was going to the school. Of course, this story had the “happy end”. After my mom found out that I was missing school, she used some physical punishment to discipline her child. I spent 1 hour standing kneeled down on buckwheat grains. First of all, it depends on the child when parents decide to use physical punishment. Some children are very nice, and usually, parents can reason with such children and explain the difference between good and bad ideas. In my case, it was the first time I decided to skip school, and my mom knew that this kind of punishment can stop me from doing similar mischief in the future. She was right because after that I never missed classes in school, university or work. Also, it depends on the child’s age. Physical punishment usually works only in younger age because in that time parents can direct their development in the right direction. At the age of 9, a child usually understands the difference between good and bad behavior, and does not need reinforcement such as spanking. But in younger age that works. This kind of lesson at age of 8 was the first and the last in my life, but I believe it was my mom’s right decision. Finally, the physical punishment depends on a situation in the family. Of course, both children and parents understand when a child is doing something bad. In a family, parents support their children, provide for their needs, and care about the future. And because of that, parents deserve respect from children. Thankfully, nothing bad happened to me, and I was uninjured and alive after spending two weeks alone in the city. My mom did not deserve this kind of behavior from me because she was giving me so much love and care. I am thankful to my mom for that lesson that has had a very beneficial impact on my whole life. In conclusion, I do not suggest that all parents use physical punishment to discipline their children. I do not think my own children would get much physical punishment from me, but my own experience shows that it was very beneficial for me.

The Benefits of a Healthy Diet

In Russia and Ukraine it has one phrase that explains the main idea of the benefits of a healthy diet, and it is “In a healthy body is a healthy spirit.” The healthy diet has several benefits. The first benefit is that if you regularly eat vegetables such as cabbage, carrot, beans, and tomatoes and meat with fish, your body looks very healthy. Because of the whole quantity of the nutrition and vitamins that vegetables, meat, and fish give you, the skin has nice pink color, and nails and hair are strong and grow fast. Another example of a healthy diet’s benefits is that the diet includes only fresh produces. It is no mystery that hamburgers, cookies, or soda are able to look fresh and eatable in the time when these are 6 or 8 months old. When you buy a hamburger, you really don’t know how old it is. On the other hand, healthy food products such as vegetables, drinking water, and grains you can eat only in fresh condition after you bought or prepared it. In addition, important benefit is that healthy diet includes produces without dangerous quantities of sugar. More sugar in your blood can cause the diabetes that can cause more problems in your body such as blindness or fatness. In contrast, the healthy food has sugar that your body needs. And finally, the healthy food gives you health, and this condition helps you be a human with a healthy spirit. People with diseases think only about the illness and not about the happy life. In conclusion, our lives relate on the health because our health is the mirror of our spirit’s condition. To eat healthy food means to help our body and mind!

The Responsibility of the Government

It is the responsibility of the government to take care of the homeless people. First of all, the homeless people are the same people like me, my husband, my family members, college students, and others. Each of us needs social, medical, financial security. An American student can have, for example, $2,500 financial aid each year for his/her study at a university, and he/she does not need to pay back this money to the government. This means that the government gives the financial security for its society members. On the other hand, American homeless people are members of society also. There are 750,000 homeless people in the USA according to the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef 1998). Also, the reason to have the government in the country is to have some force that takes care of all citizens’ needs and rights. The American homeless people are citizens of the USA, and according to the Amendments to the Constitution, all citizens have the same rights such as to vote, to speedy trial, confrontation of witnesses, to bear arms, and etc. In addition to that and according to Amendment XIV - Citizenship rights, - “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside”, so the homeless people deserve to have adequate help from the government. Finally, the homeless people do not have anybody who can take care of them. Of course, it has some foundations or organizations such as NCHV or Local Homeless Service Organizations, that help the homeless, but those organizations must have authority and financial aid. That authority and aid gives the government. Also, “the government is the body that has the authority to make and the power enforce laws within a civil, corporate, religious, academic or other organization or group.” In conclusion, the government has not only one responsibility, but many; however, the homeless people deserve to be cared and provided for by the government.

Two Systems of Education

Before I came to the USA, I studied at the University of Build Engineering in Kiev, Ukraine. Here, I study at Santa Fe Community College. It is not difficult to compare two systems of education, American and Ukrainian. First, both systems have the goal to have educated and literate nation. In America like in Ukraine, each student has opportunity to study languages, math, history, chemistry, biology and more. This helps people to have good basic skills. Then, there are two types of higher educational institutions in Ukraine and America. These two are public and private institutions. For each yang men or women that has no to much money, it has chance to study at a public college or at a university. In case, if you have enough money, you can go to the private school. There is good education in both, public and private, institutions. Finally, both systems are flexible, and it means that if a science goes forward, the educational system adapted a new technology and knowledge. For example, 20 years ago, computer was an unusual object in American schools; however, today, computers help each American student learn more and faster. The same thing is in Ukraine, two. Ukrainian students use computer to practice their skills alike American. Like we saw, American and Ukrainian high educational institutions have several characteristics that compare these both systems.

High Grades

The most important question for an ESL student is how to get high grades in English courses. According to my experience, there are several pieces of a advice to a successful solution that can answer on this question. First of all, the ESL student must be responsible. It’s very important to be preparing to a class, have all text and workbooks that need this class, do homework every day and at time, have a perfect attendance in the class, behave as an adult at the class time. If the student carries this ways how to be responsible out, it shows us his purpose of taking this subject. Next, a student must manage time. Well, we all have only 168 hours in week, 24 day hours and many things and assignments that we must complete in the same time. Our good grades depend on class, study, and review time that we must organize, too. The best way to do all at time is decision to have and follow a schedule. Than, do and learn more that is required. Our knowledge depend on practice; than more I practice than more I know. It is a good idea to do exercises on college internet resources, learn more new words each day, practice with classmates in small groups, ask teacher for a help if you have not understand the material, and than do more exercises on this area, read newspaper and books. High grades are not always the high IQ’s “mirror”; however, they helps the student have well self-esteem. If the student follow these pices of a advice and make as study skills, so hi can have high grades not only in English cources.

Not an Ideal Part-Time Job

A student life is a difficult time. Most of students leave alone, without parents, and without financial support. They are looking for a part-time job that gives money. An easier way to quickly find the job is to go to Mc Donald’s; however, this isn’t the ideal part-time job for the student. First of all, the work at fast-food places is very hard. You are the whole day on your feet; you do hard physical labor such as cleaning floors, preparing food, and flipping burgers. A next disadventage, there is an uncomfortable workplace. We can hear everywhere noise, knocks, co-worker’s cries; the smell of french-fries stands constantly around you, and even your clothing are impregnated with this smell. And the most important disadvantage is facts that work at McDonalds wan't help your future career. Each of us can learn how to wash floor, doors, dishes, and wipe tables under home conditions, but in order to become professional, for example, in medicine, that is insufficiently. These three points are only one part on list of disadvantages, but it is enough to understand that work at McDonalds isn’t the ideal part-time job for the student!

Tattooing

I don’t know how to understand some of writing in our textbook Reading for Results.

For example, on p.146-147, Locating Topic Sentences, an example where the topic sentences can appear at end of a paragraph, one sentence: “Before AD 787, early Christians used tattoos to identify members of their faith.”

Whole weekend, I tried to find this information on-line; however, I have no results that can testify this information. As a child, you think that some wizard cooks this delicious dinner and lunch only for you. Of course, it is only imagination. On other hand, it is really magic. How can you explain the action when you put together sweet sugar, honey and sour salt, and as a result you have a mysterious spice for the chicken? Also, when you taste a strong smell of the fresh bread, it is a big miracle in the cooking world, too!

Today, on the Food Channel, the best cooks share with us secretes of masterpiece and show divorce recipes from many countries. However, the best scene for this show that I can imagine is only my little old kitchen from childhood.

PS: The kitchen in my house in Ukraine. On this picture, you can see me and my friend Maria.

My Existence

It is the cool idea to write something about us in a classblog! I never have time to speak with all of my classmates, so, using the classblog, we have more opportunity to ask, answer, and have a lot of information about new friends.Let me introduce myself. The girl's name, Olena, is of Ukrainian origin, and it is a variant of Helen (Greek) which means "light." On other hand, the name “Helen” means "sun ray; shining light." If you read Greek mythology, you can remember Zeus's mortal daughter, Helen of Troy. She caused the Trojan War. She had "the face that launched a thousand ships." We can remember the Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, whose purity allowed her to discover the True Cross.Of course, I’m not Helen of Troy or Saint Helena. First, I was born in Ukraine in the 20th century. If you have a good knowledge of geography, you would know that Greece remains Greece and not Ukraine. Second, my parents were not from big “Cesar family”. I can not describe my childhood as a wonderful time in a palace. Third, I’m not so beautiful like Helen of Troy because my face “doesn’t launch a thousand ships”.However, I enjoy my existence.

Crime

It is a nice evening today. I just watch a move with my husband. The move is called “Road to perdition”, and it tells about a one family, a big family, a mafia family. I understand more and more that I dislike some kind of move because it tells about crime and tells more than I will know in my life. Every one of us makes a choice. Before we start doing something, we should answer questions “What kind of person am I? What brings it me in the future? How helps it in my life?”
The crime is a choice, but it is not my choice.
